The experience with them makes Epson look like the golden boys. Boy what a mistake that was they haven't a clue. Seeing as how the supplied OCR software is PowerPC only I made the terrible mistake of buying Readirs 11 to go with it as it was supposed to be intel native. Also the buttons that are supposed to create PDF's or scan to email don't do anything on the Mac they just launch the Epson Scan software. All of the bundled software and utilities are PowerPC as well, what a horrible mess. Only half the job has been done with updating to intel, the "Epson scan monitor" that monitors the scanner status is still PPC only, so there is always PowerPC software running, resulting in a huge unnecessary waste of memory running Rosetta emulation just for this little monitoring app.

But thats where the good points for Mac Users end. So points must be awarded for the inclusion of a Universal driver that is compatible with intel Macs. 2 intel native editing apps like photoshop can not import from the scanner due to the PPC driver. 1 the CPU is maxed out just for a simple scanning job.

Most scanners work in Rosetta emulation with old PPC drivers causing two problems.

It is quite difficult to find a consumer grade scanner that actually works natively on an intel Mac. So overall Epson has to loose a point for not doing the environmentally sound thing of extending the life of existing hardware. Epson could have quite easily provided an intel driver for the scanner I already had but in what I believe to be a deliberate attempt to force new hardware purchases this was not the case. As I have an intel processor mac I wanted an intel native scanner (Universal). I bought this scanner reluctantly because it seems Epson/HP/Canon have a policy of not updating drivers for their older models.

Also not all the buttons work in Vista/7 only scan, scan to pdf and at one point, I think, Copy (printer).

UPDATE: Has had a fair bit of use and am still happy with it although I have detected that there is a problem, I think in the glass, that changes ever so slightly the colour of the very edge of one side meaning it is not possible to do a high quality full size scan. One thing other manufacturers could take some note of is the quality of the cabling - lovely rubber feel to the USB cable which has already lost nearly all of its kinks (I have a USB cable, I think from a monitor, which is nearly five years old and despite best efforts is still in a mess). Overall I would recommend this to anyone looking for a budget scanner or even something breaking into the mid-range. I cannot give it five stars though as it arrived with a very slight 'film' of something on the UNDERNEATH of the glass scan area which forced me to take the scanner apart to clean it off. This does not impact on the ability to use the scanner though.

I would point out that Epson could improve the overall feel of the software included - the install left multiple folders and duplicate shortcuts in my start menu and the software feels a little bit at times, from the user interface side, like a collection of programs rather than a suite. I followed the setup instructions step by step and had no setup issues at all. Haven't had a chance to test it in detail yet but the quality, especially for a scanner of this price, and for a scanner generally is very good - I have scanned a few film slides and documents and these all with basically the default settings were excellent and fast enough for me (an average user).
